RML Awarded £0.94M Contract to Re-engineer the Auto Control Systems Equipments for Hinkley Point 'B'
Problem
The Automatic Control System (ACS) controls the four boilers associated with the reactor and also assists in the control of the reactor. It involves equipment of an old analogue semi modular design. British Energy sought a design and equipment package to re-engineer the 166 trays of 24 different types involved in the ACS.
Solution
RML's solution retained the functionality and the mechanical construction of the racking to ensure that the new equipment would be operationally and physically interchangeable with the existing equipment and would cause minimum disruption/downtime during installation.
Reduced component count through the choice of modern discrete devices and simple integrated circuits facilitated EMC compliance with microprocessors and similar complex devices deliberately avoided to support the high reliability and safety requirements. Reliability and availability for ten years was part of our engineering solution.
This contract is now well underway, with phase1 design complete and all equipment delivered and installed.
RML's Skills
RML have an enviable reputation for exactly the sort of skills required for this task. We have been in the military and civil nuclear business for more than 40 years, and have designed, manufactured, repaired and overhauled many of the instrumentation & control systems in use today.
In the civil business, we have successfully redesigned and manufactured thermocouple multiplexers, trip amplifiers, valve control circuits, hoist weighing equipment, and various other equipments.
